Re: [ranchos] The Black Legend

thanks Chris,

yes that is what I heard. I guess that the idea is that every culture inflicted its savageness and pain on others and why should Spain be picked out exclusively over the others. Why is it that Spain is singled out. . .is that the point? Afterall England sure did a lot of terrible and horrible stuff to other Native Americans but nothing is said about their Cruel Streak.  Why is Spain so evil when compared to what the Aztecs and other Indian nations were doing to each other before Spain came on the scene?

I really don't know that much about the "Black Legend" and was hoping to see what others thought about it. In fact the first time I heard about it was less than a month ago. . .I guess its an attempt at making us not look at things in such a "black and white" frame of mind. That we should consider the times and not judge 14th century peoples and their actions by 21st century standards.

. . .i guess I need to look into this more,

>From what I remember, the Black Legend refers to how
the English tried to portray the Spanish. It refers to
the idea that the Spanish had a cruel streak within
them, as evidenced by the Inquisition that was
happening in Spain to the known abuses that some
Spaniards inflicted on Native Americans. The Black
Legend is sort of a case of the victor writing the
history--especially, after the English victory over
the Spanish armada in 1588, making the English the
undisputed ruler of the seas.

I hope this helps.
