the English tried to portray the Spanish. It refers to
the idea that the Spanish had a cruel streak within
them, as evidenced by the Inquisition that was
happening in Spain to the known abuses that some
Spaniards inflicted on Native Americans. The Black
Legend is sort of a case of the victor writing the
history--especially, after the English victory over
the Spanish armada in 1588, making the English the
undisputed ruler of the seas.
