Yes, they are like miniseries. As I
understand it, a Mexican department store chain came up with the idea of
celebrating its 100 anniversary with a series of historical novelas, so they
commissioned the novelas already in existence plus others in the planning to
be put on CD, DVD, and tapes. They are fairly cheap to way cheaper
on e-bay than through other sources. Most are under 30 dollars.
some are adapted to so many DVDS, others are complete.
Here's a list of some that are available.
The summaries are not mine, they are found on the internet under various
authors. to find them just type in the novels' names and look for the one that
rads the name plus the word telenovela:
La antorcha encendida. Summary: Three centuries of Spanish domination. Three hundred years
in which the discontent roiling the population of New Spain has grown along
with their wounds of injustice, exploitation, poverty and discrimination. It
is in this awakening Mexico that the love story between Mariano and Teresa
unfolds. United not only in love, but also in the desire to free their
country, the twists and turns of their destinies will lead us through history
along the path to Mexico's independence and freedom
El vuelo del aguila. Summary. A military hero in the Reform Wars, Porfirio Diaz was also
one of the strategists behind the overthrow of the empire by Republicans.
Several times he tried to attain power through military coups, but was
defeated until a last revolt in 1876 took him to the Presidency of the
Republic. Except for a short period of four years, he governed until 1911,
when a takeover by Francisco I. Madero forced him into exile. He lived long
enough to see his revolution fall apart and all of his gains destroyed by his
own lengthy stay in power. As a hero or sly weaver of intrigues, Porfirio Diaz
learns, fights, plots, governs, kills, pacificies, loves, suffers, cries,
devotes himself to his work and does not abandon it until his own people rise
up to expel him.
El carruaje. Summary. The intense,
vibrant actor Carlos Monden is the hero of a majestic fresco about political
events of 1867 in Mexico. The unhappy and dramatic experience of Archduc
Ferdinando Giuseppe Massimiliano d'Asburgo, the Mexican emperor, by will of
Naploeon III is going to an end... He will be betrayed by a collaborator and
he will have to capitulate to republican army of Benito
Juarez.
Senda de gloria. Summary. This is the
story of Mexican revolution between 1916 and 1939. The cousins Eduardo and
Archibald Alvares receive as the inheritance a house of XIX century in the
capital. At first only Eduardo takes possession of this inheritance and he
establishes in the villa with his family. Later on in 1919, Archibald
establishes in the other side of the house. Between the two cousins there were
some discords in the past, but their political views will join them together
because they both are favorable to the Revolution. The general Eduardo Alvares
is the secretary of the President Carranza, he is married to Fernanda and has
four children: Felipe, Julieta, Andrea, Antonio. Archibald Alvares is married
to Carmen (who is Eduardo's sister) and they have two children: Hector and
Nora. Then the President Carranza is killed, his place is taken first by the
dictator Alvaro Obregon, then by the provisional Adolfo de La Huerta and
finally by the General Rubio. Eduardo Alvares refuses to stick to the new
Government and escapes with his family. He joins the army of revolutionaries
of Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. During the voyage they meet Manuel
Fortuna, a young revolutionary and Andrea falls in love with him, but after a
set of circumstances she marries James Von Hallen, and Manuel marries Nora
ALvares. Then the Revolution is going to its end, a new president is elected:
Lazaro Cardenas with the support of Eduardo Alvares and Plutarco Calles. There
are lot of victims: Antonio ALvares, who is a priest, is killed in a battle
with the Government, the same destiny is for Felipe Alvares. Elvira who is
Manuel's sister, sacrifices herself to save her brother. A bad destiny for
Julieta Alvares; after her fiance Gerardo Ruiz's death and an affair with Jose
Vasconcelos, she goes to Spain with her love Hector to fight against the
dictatorship of Francisco Franco, but she is deadly wounded. At the end,
Andrea and Manuel decide to live freely their love.
Corazon salvaje. Summary. Juan del Diablo grew up a savage on the beaches of San
Pedro, abused by the man who raised him because he was the bastard of his wife
and the wealthy landowner Francisco de Alcazar y Valle. Don Francisco did not
know he had a son, and shortly after finding out, he dies, leaving only a
letter with his wishes to give Juan his name - a letter that his wife, Sofia,
hides. Also, before dying he asks his legitimate son Andres to take care of
Juan. But Andres goes to live in Mexico city. 15 years later, Monica, one of
the two daughters of a penniless countess, is about to marry Andres. But in
Mexico city Andres meets and falls in love with her sister Aimee. They both
return back to San Pedro and Andres breaks his compromise with Monica and asks
Aimee to marry him. Though Aimee has begun an affair with Juan, she can't pass
up the opportunity to marry so well. Juan is just a poor wretch and a smuggler
to boot. He knows Andres is his half-brother, but Andres doesn't know that.
Aimee marries Andres when Juan is away and Monica decides to enter a convent
to hide her humiliation. But when Juan arrives furious and determined to
abscond with his half-brother's new wife, Monica steps in the middle to
prevent a tragedy. To cover for her sister, she says that she was the one who
has been seeing Juan y her sacrifice compels her to marry him. Though Juan is
a violent man, without manners, education or even a last name, Monica falls in
love with him and discovers that beneath his tough exterior lies a heart -
wild, yes, but of gold.
Los plateados. Summary. This is the historical novela which takes place in the
states of Guanajuato and Taxco in Mexico during the late 1800s to the early
1900. Los Plateados is about the bandits who call themselves Los Plateados,
which means the silver plated ones. The band consists of three brothers and a
sister. The head of the band is Gabriel. He is also the oldest of his
brothers. He falls in love with Camila, the wife of Emilio Gallardo, a strong
willed man who also sleeps around with many women, including Camila's older
sister Luciana. Camila is also in love with Gabriel, although she is married
to Emilio. Camila is forced to marry Emilio because her family needs financial
support that Emilio can provide. On the day of Camila's wedding she is
kidnapped by Gabriel and taken to the woods. Although nothing happens between
them, Gabriel sets Camila free. After that encounter Camila and Gabriel begin
falling for each other. The purpose of Los Plateados is to bring justice to
the ones who are opposed. Los Plateados is like a group of Robin Hood. The
other purpose of Los Plateados is to revenge for Ximena's father, who died
many years ago.
El privilegio de amar.
Summary. This is not a
historical novel but is one that goes into the double standard and mores
prevalent in some places. It has some inaccuracies about the Catholic
religion. Luciana is a beautiful orphaned
girl, working as a maid in the house of a young seminary student, Juan Carlos
de la Cruz. Driven by the passion of their youth, they spent a night together,
after which Juan Carlos returns back to the seminary and Luciana is pregnant
and is kicked out of the house. After giving birth to a girl, in despair,
Luciana decides to leave her at the door of a big rich house, but the girl was
given to the convent of the Sisters of the Charity, where they raise her and
give her education. 20 years later Luciana is a successful woman, she is an
owner of a prestigious fashion company and she is married to Andrés, an
attractive TV actor. Andrés has a son from his first marriage, Victor Manuel,
who will meet Cristina when she becomes a model and they will fall in
love

Are these historical Mexican novelas like mini-series that we see here
in the US? I would love to see those, but we get no Spanish language
broadcasts here in the Seattle area. Where could I get the videos or
DVDs? I just love costume dramas.
Also, a long time ago, my Spanish friend told me that my mother, who
was from New Mexico, spoke a very old Spanish dialect and she even told me
the province or area in Spain where it was once spoken, but I can't remember
it. Could it be Estremadura?
