The burial record literally reads as follows:

"Manuel Castañeda Adulto del Salto de los Romeros, H.L. (Hijo Legítimo)
+ Limosna

En el Cementerio de esta Yglecia de Santa María a siete de Septiembre de mil ochocientos veinte y tres.  Yo el Bachiller Don Lorenso del Muro di licencia para que se enterrase de Limosna al Adulto Manuel Castañeda del Salto de los Romeros de estado Viudo de primeras nupcias de María Melchora Miramontes, de cosa de ochenta años de edad, hijo legítimo de José Castañeda y María Melchora (la espresada arriba es la madre del Muerto y su Muger fue M.a Lugarda Días) recibió los Sacramentos.  Murió de evacuación.  Y para que conste lo firmé con el Señor Cura.  . . . Lorenzo del Muro (rúbrica) . . . Ygnacio Suárez (rúbrica)."

The notary priest was about to make a mistake regarding Manuel Castañeda's ALREADY dead wife.  Notice he wrote that he was married to María Melchora Miramontes first, but then he later corrects himself and says "the above mentioned is the mother of the deceased (thus not his wife) and his wife was Ma. Lugarda Díaz). Manuel died a widower, indicating that his wife, Ma. Lugarda Díaz, had already passed away.  His parents were José Castañeda and María Melchora Miramontes.  Most likely they were all from Tlaltenango, Zacatecas, as that was the epicenter of ALL the Miramontes in the region. 

In case anybody out there has the Miramontes surname, like I do, we are also related to the Haro/Aro family.  The surname used to be Miramontes de Haro, in the late 1500, and some of the sons used Miramontes and others used Haro/Aro.  The Miramontes and Haro are all related.  I have a Miramontes connection from Tlaltenango.  I descend from Diego de Miramontes (from Tlaltenango) married to María de Anda (from Teocaltiche), through their daughter María de Anda y Miramontes, who married Tomás Macías Valadéz on 2 February 1693, in Aguascalientes.  Several of their children moved to and married in Ayo el Chico, Jalisco.  So Joseph, it seems we have a familial connection at last, as tenuous as it may be.

Any way, back to the burial entry.  Manuel Castañeda died of "evacuación," which literally means evacuation, a description covering many diseases like diarrhea or dysentery.  He was 80 years old when he died in 1823, which if the age was correct, means he was born in 1743.  Later on, I'll prove he was born in 1744, which means he was actually 79 years old when he died.

If Manuel was born in 1743 then he would have been 20 to 24 years old when he married in 1763 to 1767.  This fits in with what I found.  I did a search on him and his wife María Lugarda Díaz and found several children, the first of which was born in 1768

Notice that the children were born in Colotlán, Tlaltenango, and Momax.  There's probably more of them out there, but you'll have to go looking for them.

I was not able to find Manuel's marriage with Ma. Lugarda Díaz.  I tried looking for him as Manuel Castañeda and as Joseph Manuel Castañeda, using both different first names, but nothing. 

I also tried doing a parent search and marriage search on Joseph Castañeda and María Melchora Miramontes, but again, nothing.  So, if you can't climb over a wall or go around it, then start digging under it.  There's always a way through

I did searches on any Castañeda/Miramontes children and noticed that there was a couple by the name of Luis Castañeda and Melchora Miramontes.  TOO MUCH OF A COINCIDENCE.  Manuel's father Joseph was really Luis, or probably Joseph Luis Castañeda.  Many times when someone is not sure of a name, they'll just say "José" or "Joseph" which was equivalent to Fulano or "so and so."

The marriage extract in the IGI for Luis Castañeda did not mention who he married but I'll bet you a million bucks that it was Melchora de los Reyes Miramontes.  Melchora de los Reyes was a very popular first name in this region back in those days.  I've seen it many times before.

Did you notice that there was a child by the name of María de la Concepción, the one born in 1742?  Ring a bell?  What about the one baptized in 1744 by the name of Antonio Manuel?  Antonio MANUEL...MANUEL!!!!  Could this be the same Manuel Castañeda married to Ma. Lugarda Díaz in the burial entry?  Here's proof undeniable:

Leogarda is the same as Lugarda.
