Just a word on DNA tests for females...of course they can be done.
Females have DNA just like males. But remember from your chapter on
Genetics in your Biology class, females have XX chromosomes and males
have XY chromosomes. Male haploid reproductive cells (sperm cells) are
either X or Y chromosome cells. Female haploid (or ova) are ALL
X-chromosome cells. When an X sperm cell fertilizes a X ovum, a baby
girl is conceived. When a Y sperm cell fertilizes an X ovum, a baby
boy is conceived. That is why males determine the sex of the newborn
child.
As Joseph, and anyone else who has investigated their genetic
genealogy, can attest to, paternal origin can only be checked via the
Y-DNA only. Consequently, only males can have their Y-DNA traced,
because only males have the Y-chromosome (which is where the Y-DNA is
located). Unfortunately, females are XX and have no Y-DNA, so females
have to ask a close male relative (father, brother, or paternal-cousin)
if they want their Y-DNA checked along their direct male line.
But there is good news. Both males and females have X-DNA, so the
mitochondrial DNA can be analyzed through both males and females.
Mitochondrial DNA (or M-DNA) rarely mutates and is passed from mother
to daughter, and directly along the female line. Males have M-DNA but
do not transmit the M-DNA to their sons or daughters. So if two
individuals, either male or female, have the same M-DNA, then they both
descend from the same ancestress.
I am no genetic scientist, so I only have a general understanding. I
hope that this little bit of information helps anyone else out there
with questions.
Sincerely,
Steven Hernandez

I will talk to my dad again about this. Don't they do
DNA tests yet on females?

Thanks Prima,
I haven't heard from you lately. Just thinking about
you as I was
organizing some of our Muro Records. I'm trying to
get my mess into some
kind of a reasonable pile. Thanks again. I'm trying
to find a Muro from
my line of Muro's to consider DNA testing. Any
Muro's on your side that
might be good candidates?
