Relationships in Spanish

Joseph,

Among the people I know, it is common to hear about "Abuelos",
"Bisabuelos" and "Tatarabuelos". Beyond that, I've never heard those
greek prefixes like tetra, penta, hexa, etc. attached to the word
"abuelo" but rather the ordinal numbers cuarto, quinto, sexto, etc. or
its numerical equivalent 4to., 5to., 6to., etc.

However, there's some confusion on the numbering system depending on
if you're counting the "abuelos" or the "bisabuelos". For example, my
genealogy software (In English) uses the following nomenclature, which
I have paired with its Spanish equivalent:

Grandparent = Abuelo
Great Grandparent = Bisabuelo or 2do. Abuelo
2nd. Great Grandparent = Tatarabuelo or 3er. Abuelo or 2do. Bisabuelo
3rd. Great Grandparent = 4to. Abuelo or 3er. Bisabuelo
And so on.

The convention in Spanish is to count the "abuelos", but if you're
doing a translation of, let's say, 3rd. Great Grandparent you have to
be careful and translate it either as 3er. Bisabuelo or 4to. Abuelo.

I hope this isn't even more confusing!

Victor

p.s. Remember than in Spanish ordinal numbers have gender so you would
say octavo abuelo and octava abuela. "o" ending for male; "a" ending
for female.
