Rosalinda,
This site is facinating. I looked up Herrera, and there appears to be a rancho en Los Altos de Jalisco and Luna in Jerez! Now while this may be a very remote possibility, perhaps the families from the areas are related to those from Tlaltenango. Or, it could mean that there were lots of baptisms being performed on the indigenous populations, and they ran out of surnames.....

If you click on this link: http://biblio2.colmex.mx/bibdig/dicc_cubas/base3.htm , it is a geographic dictionary and lists many of the ranchos and cities in Mexico, in alphabetical order. Click on M, and then scroll down to the link for Muertos, which happens to be on page 152, volume 4. There are 18 ranchos listed under Muerto, and 5 under Muertos, with other variations included. I love this website, as it often helps me identify towns or ranchos that are unfamiliar to me. There is a rancho named Muertos near Tepetongo, which is near Jerez.

Thank you both for your most useful information. I am now in the midst of pursuing all of the avenues I was given. My sincere "mil gracias" for your time in coming to my rescue.
