this sounds good to me if the membership would like to go in this direction. Maybe it will be different this time but in times past I have had trouble getting folks to vote and a move of this nature would need a bare minimum 51% vote in favor of such actions.

We would need to either get small donations to cover a cost of about
$150 a year for hosting
we currently have 93 members of which I'd say that 85 would be left after all said and done. So lets say 75 were willing to do this then that would be $2 per member am I right?
or try to make that money back through
advertising on the site... We can get Google ads on the site and as
long as people click through on the ads enough, we will probably be
able to make back the cost (depending on how many users there are and
how often people go on the site).

My cost estimate is for a hosting package that would give us 3GB of
storage. People could upload files in addition to their GEDCOMs.
All of the family information would be searchable by name, place,
etc. and could be searchable on a tree-specific basis or the entire
database could be searched at once. Of course these functions would
only be available for registered members. How many are there?
93

20mb + 20mb + 30mb

yes yes yes, if about 5-10 people would take and open up a site

like

yours then I could reopen the main files area for everyone to use

as

they please. Actually we could completely clear out the genealogies

and

put them all in the links area of the group if everyone just made a
website for themselves.

How much storage space are you using now with all of the Ranchos
groups and briefcase combined? How many members are there? Is
anybody storing anything more sophisticated than their GEDCOM data
that they are then transmitting in various formats (Word, PDF,

etc.)

Check out my family website (I will send you the link in an email)
and see if you think this might be a possible alternative, where
people could upload their GEDCOM files (minus living individuals)

and

we can simply restrict access completely to members. In addition,

we

could use the bulletin board there in lieu of this group and

people

can sign up for more specific areas of interest to receive email
notification, i.e. by specific geography or topic of posting, etc.

We could probably host a site like this for $10-$20 a month if the
database is not too big.

Joseph,

I have recently been perusing the members' profiles and noticed

that there are many people who have blank profiles. The profiles
section allows us to post some favorite links, a little about each

of

us, one photograph and a favorite quote, it even entices you to
create a free web page via yahoo/geocities.com. Even I the clumsy

non-

techy person was able to create a very simple page. I would

encourage

others to do the same and while I like the who's who I think we
should also take the time to fill out the member profiles.

I am slowly but surely advancing in my research and would be

willing to put a link to my homepage with some of my geneaological
data once I submit it. I realize that it would be public and not
private but I would not be putting any data for living family

members.

Alicia

I look forward to checking out any of your submissions to the

files section of Ranchos, if Joseph allows it.

I do! In fact I allow every member (that's the requirement for

members only). . .I allow each and every member to go to the files
and links areas of the group and look into (thoroughly study is

more

like it) the individual folders and links to personal webpages of
each other in search of more family connections.

I do. . .in fact I'm a firm believer that the words "I do" are

too

tame. When my wife and I got married in 1995 the justice of the

peace

said "do you Joseph take Figen to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

my

reply was not "I do", but rather "Absolutely without a doubt."

Yes the files and links are open and will continue to be open to

all members of the group without restriction. The only restriction

is

in the modification of the files that are in currently submitted.

The

reason there is a restriction is because I am doing all in my

power

to keep Ranchos, Free. I don't want to have to charge a small fee

to

be part of this group. That being the case I'm juggling Ranchos,
Ranchos2, and now YahooBriefcase to find solutions to our growing
need for additional file space. I closed user modification of the
Ranchos file space but that doesn't mean the files there can't be
modified. A simple email to me and I will Add, Remove or even
completely delete all entires. I'm open to helping do whatever

needs

to be done. I just don't have the solution to leaving it open and
possibly maxing out the alloted 20megs of space and be in

situation

where people who have their files there already wouldn't be able

to

make additions. I would hate for one person to have to have

part of his/her work in the main files area and another part in

the YahooBriefcase area. Therefore I closed it with about 20% of

the

space remaining for the members there (a majority of us) to make
additions as needed.

I'm open to ideas if anyone would like to tackle this problem.

The

easiest solution would be to hire a megasite with unlimited

storage

capacity and hire a technician to handle the technical end of it

(not

me) and go from there.

Yes, I'm not happy with the situation, but can anyone figure out

a

Free alternative other than Ranchos3, Ranchos4, Ranchos5, etc.?

thanks,

joseph
