Joseph, thank you for making me aware of Ellen Simms article.  I'm working on records from Tonila Jalisco and found that the Indio's and Mulato's live in Barrios around the town of Tonila but the only "natives" that seem to live in town belong to Espanol's. Her article explains all the barrios. The Tonila records are from the 1700's.  Being able to read articles like Miss  Simms and then doing the records really puts a face of the lives our ancestors lived.. There is a division between the haves and have-nots in the Espanol world too, not all were hacienda owners and slave owners, many were just plain working people trying to get by and survive.
