Title: Caja del Rio Grant testimony,
    1887-1914 (bulk 1904-1914).
    Year: 1887-1914
Description: 1 box (.38 cu. ft.)
    Language: English
Abstract: The bulk of this collection consists of testimonies in case 4123 of Aniceto Abeytia et al., Plaintiffs, vs. Willi Spiegelberg et al., Defendants in the District Court of Santa Fe, New Mexico from 1907-1908, regarding partitions of the Caja del Rio land grant. The testimonies contain extensive genealogies meant to establish heirs of the original grantee (Nicolas Ortiz II) and his wife (Juana Baca) as well as information regarding the boundaries of the land in question, which overlap to some degree with land in the La Majada Grant. Also includes genealogies and testinomies regarding the Antonio Ortiz grant (land granted to a grandson of Nicolas Ortiz II). Included is testimony about Ramon Ortiz and his prominence as a clergyman in New Mexico. Thomas B. Catron and L. Bradford Prince were both witnesses in the case and attorneys for various defendants.
Access: Note: Inventory available at the URL below. Collection housed in the Center for Southwest Research, University of New Mexico General Library.

Note(s): Related collections at the Center for Southwest Research: Thomas B. Catron Papers, and Flora Spiegelberg Papers./ Bio/History: The Court of Private Land Claims was established in 1891. It consisted of five judges empowered to determine the validity of land titles from Spain and Mexico held by descendants of the original grantees. This collection consists of subsequent court cases regarding the Caja del Rio grant. The land involved in this case was originally granted to Nicolas Ortiz II, Niño Ladrón de Guevara (also written Guebara), born in Mexico to Nicolas Ortiz I, who joined colonists in Zacatecas in 1693 and served as aid to Don Diego de Vargas, Governor of New Mexico. While many grantees received land from viceroys and representatives of the King, Nicolas Ortiz II received this land by authority of the King, himself. The Caja del Rio Grant consisting of 66,848.783 acres northwest of Santa Fe in Santa Fe County was ultimately confirmed and approved by the Court of Private Land Claims as property of claimant Felipe Delgado. Though he is not referenced in the testimonies in this collection, the genealogies presented in the testimonies confirm that Felipe Delgado is second cousin to the plaintiff (Aniceto Abeytia), and that both are great-grandsons of the original grantee.

Corp Author(s): Princeton University Library. ; Manuscript.; Princeton MS. 185.; William Reese Company, ; bookseller.
    Publication: Mexico; Fresnillo.
    Year: 1576-1590
    Description: 1 v. (240 leaves) : paper.
    Language: Spanish; Spanish
Abstract: Account book kept by royal treasury officials in Fresnillo, Viceroyalty of New Spain, to record the receipts from miners working at the silver mines of Fresnillo and Mazapil, located in Zacatecas (a state in north central Mexico), from Apr. 16, 1576- Aug. 14, 1590 with some gaps (e.g. 1585). Spanish settlers and indigenous laborers worked the mines from the 1560s. As recorded in the day book, royal officials weighed the raw silver and assigned values in maravedis. After taxes were deducted, the miners received the remaining value in silver. Entries record the names of the miners and owners of the claim. Royal officials such as Gaspar del Espinosa, Francisco Beltran, and Alalcara de Mesa added their signatures at the end of each day's transactions. Fols. 234r-240v are blank.

Description: xxvi, 781, [17] p., [1] leaf of plates, bound : col. coats of arms, plan ; 33 cm.
    Language: Spanish; In Spanish.
Abstract: Nineteenth-century copy of the history of the conquest of Nueva Galicia and the founding of Guadalajara, its capital city, with descriptions of other provinces of New Spain, written in 1742 by Mota Padilla, fiscal of the Audiencia of Guadalajara. The history, arranged in 96 chapters, documents the conquest of Nueva Galicia, definitively concluded in 1529-31 by Nuño de Guzmán, as well as the early history and government of the province under Guzmán and other conquistadores such as Pedro Almendes Chirinos and Cristóbal de Oñate. Mota also outlines the founding of the city of Guadalajara in Nochistlán in 1532, the move to the valley of Atemajac in 1542, and its designation as capital of Nueva Galicia in 1560. The material covers the establishment of churches and convents in the city; the administration of the Real Audiencia and royal treasury of Guadalajara; municipal government; taxes; and biographical details on officials, clergy, and bishops of the city. There are a few chapters describing the towns, mining districts, terrain, and evangelization of the various Indian tribes of the provinces of Sinaloa, Sonora, Ostimuri, and California. Also included are color illustrations of the coats of arms of Guadalajara and Durango and of 2 conquistadores of the province, Francisco de Mota and Cristóval Romero; a plan of Guadalajara; and preliminary statements from King Ferdinand VI, endorsements by church officials, and the author's note to the reader.

Santa Ana Atoyasolc was one of the Spanish-owned landed estates in the province. Land was bought in small parcels from the Indians to create a large hacienda./ The owner of this large estate, and the man who had these documents compiled and bound, was Don Francisco Mateo de Luna. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1666, he held the title, "Contador del Tribunal Mayor de Cuentas" of Mexico until his retirement. He was the first in his family to achieve status as a member of a noble order, Calatrava. Don Francisco did not reside in Mexico City, but in Puebla de los Angeles, the second largest city in Mexico and its commercial center. It was in Pueblas that Don Francisco hired a skilled notary and artist to actually put these manuscripts together: Jose Manuel Estomba de la Torre, of Pueblas.

Abstract: Manuscripts and printed material relating primarily to the Mexican independence movement, but also pertaining to conditions in Mexico at the end of the 18th century, the empire of Agustín Iturbide, the establishment of the republic, and Mexico's governance and foreign relations, especially with England, France, Spain, and the U.S. Many historical figures of Mexico are represented in the collection. The Manuscripts subgroup, in which over half the items date from 1820 to 1825, includes letters, descriptions of battles, records of insurgents' trials, military service records, documents concerning the conspiracy of Manuel Reyes, the archives of General José de la Cruz, many personal papers of José Mariano Michelena, and material gathered by Carlos María Bustamante to document the independence movement. The Printed Material subgroup, in which the bulk of the items are dated 1822-1823, contains among its pamphlets and broadsides many literary productions, such as manifestos, speeches, odes, poetry, sermons, and pastoral letters, as well as decrees, circulars, and proclamations. Most items in Printed Materials pertain to independence, the empire of Iturbide, and the early days of the republic.
