FYI: Misc Colotlan Hacienda Info

1/29/05   Cousin Joseph:   Yes, you may share the info on Hacienda Hipasote.  Especially if it will assist us in finding information about our family.

We -- the Romans -- still have family living out on the ranches surrounding Hacienda Hipasote.   Also, one of our relatives is married to the neice of the current owner, Fernando Macias -- she says that her great aunt purchased the hacienda and her father & his brother - Fernando Macias inherited the hacienda ---- then her father died.

This is how this lady - can't remember her name & forgot to check my family tree maker program before typing this e-mail -- is related:  Julian Roman had a younger brother named Juan "Chico" Roman -- he had a son named Jose Roman & Jose had a daughter named Francisca Roman  --- Francisca has a son named Guadalupe Ceballos & Guadalupe is married to the Macias woman.

It was by accident that I came across this information.   In 1997 - the 1st time that we visited Hacienda Hipasote (also spelled Ypasote) & were told that Fernando Macias owned the hacienda I wrote the information in my book.   When we were in town, we were told that a woman down the street, turn right on the next street and knock on the third door on the left and ask to speak to Francisca Ceballos as she was born a Roman.   We did that & met Francisca, her son Guadalupe & family.   We went to Guadalupe's house the next day and while sitting in their living room, I noticed the college dipolma of his wife with her name of "Macias".    We were excited about Hacienda Hipasote and mentioned our visit & the fact that someone in Calif. by the name of Fernando Macias was the owner.   Guadalupe's wife said -- "what do you mean"???   --- I am part owner of the hacienda & she told me the story I related above.

By the way, Guadalupe Ceballos is the director and administrator of the only Teacher's College in Colotlan and both he & his wife are well educated.

I really need to document -- review all my notes -- & document all the information that I have on our family -- most of it is just in my head???

When we visit we find out very interesting information on our family ----

1/28/05   Cousin Joseph:   This is what I know about the haciendas:

1.    Hacienda Hipasote -- is in Colotlan -- and is the hacienda that Julian was the manager of in the 1800s, probably 1860s to ------early 1900s??   This hacienda is in the hills of Colotlan with ranches for miles around.   It was owned at one time by the Sanchez-Castellanos family, which I have not been able to connect to our Romans,  but I think they are related.

The current owner is Fernando Macias, who lives in Calif. -- along the beach area -- I have not looked him up, but was told that he lives in So. Calif. in a city named Santa  _____ --- could be Santa Monica or Santa Barbara.

This is the hacienda that I visited in 1997 & 1999.   There were caretakers at the hacienda when we visited as it is being restored and no one lives there.   We introduced ourselves [my mother, my aunt-Maria Escandon who was born in Las Lajas rancho one of the  - one managed by Hipasote in the past & a friend from the city of Colotlan] and told them that we were from the Roman family.   Immediately the caretakers knew the name and showed us the room where Juan Francisco Roman (Julian's 1st son from his 1st marriage) died in 1941.   The caretakers let us tour the hacienda, very carefully as there were boards holding up the inside of the arches of the patio area, and I took pictures, etc.  The caretakers provided us some history on the Roman family.   They also told us that Juan Francisoc Roman thought of himself as a well to do Spanish horseman and rode very nice horses and dressed in very fine clothes.

I do not know if Julian Roman owned the hacienda or ranches, but he managed them.  Julian made sure that all brothers, sisters, uncles, nephews, etc. had a ranch to manage -- so he took care of the families by giving them specific responsibilities to earn income.

2.    The other haciendas that Julian managed were:  one in Monte Escobedo and two in Santa Maria -- I do not know the names of them.

Do you know the name of the haciendas in Colotlan that the Felguerez family owned or ran in Colotlan??

If we had the time to just travel out there and talk to people, we could find out a lot of information.
