Many of our social etiquette rules, i.e. respecting elders, shaking hands, etc. are not written in books, they were passed through word of mouth and social practice. Many of the masses in early times could not read, as only the clergy and upper social classes had the opportunity to go to school in the 1800's and earlier. Manuel Roman
