FYI - Many of the "social rules" were based on the catholic traditions brought by the Spanish to Mexico.  The non Spaniards, i.e., French and other Europeans used the traditions Anglo-Saxon traditions, like those in main stream America today. I learned this from word of month like so many Hispanics. I confirmed this with my in-laws who agree.
