Re: [ranchos] Sylvia's ONE LAST TRY

Alice,

I feel the same way as you do. We have 3 children all of which married Anglo-Americans. My greatest desire was to have brown grandbabies so as not to lose our heritage. I would love them all and do love them regardless of their color or parentage. But I too have a problem with wanting to be only European.

I think Joseph mentioned in one of his previous comments that he will stop people just to ask them what part of Mexico they are from. My husband and I do the same thing, in a restaurant, the gardeners, our cleaning ladies or a new company employee with a spanish surname.

As I grow older I become more Mexicana not less. As I grow older I go back to who I've always been with the sense and security that comes with love and acceptance of who you are. In my younger self I wanted to fit in and be like everyone else even if it meant separating from my roots. Now I'm not willing or able to give that up. Here in California there's a new radio station called La Preciosa. It has been such a wonderful gift to me and to many other people because it embraces our language, music and culture like no other station had for decades.

My five year old blond grandson who is with us a lot will say, Abuela, that's the Mariachi because he has been present at family occasions such as weddings and birthdays where a Mariachi has been playing. I am from Tlachichila Zacatecas in the Municipio de Nochistlan which was the first Guadalajara, where they grow and cultivate great muscians for the mariachi and the banda including Mariachi Vargas who presently has two Tlachichila musicians amongst it's band.

For years I have wanted to know what Indian tribes we descend from. I have learned that in our region the Caxcanes the Guachichiles and the Huicholes were the predominant indian tribes before Los Espanoles arrived and even after and during their reign so I'm assuming that we might be their descendents.

Joseph, I too would like to know if you believe that your DNA test is something that would provide us with something tangible as to our roots and heritage?

Thanks, Alicia.
PS: when I was growing up I was Alice, after I got married I went back to being Alicia my name of birth, go figure!

Joseph,

Would you be willing to share the results of your DNA test with the group?  I'd like to know whether you felt it was worth the money and trouble.

Also, I haven't heard anybody out their brag about their dark or short relatives.  The more I learn about Mexican history, the more I value Indian characteristics and view them as attractive.  The study of my family's genealogy has made me love and respect all my relatives equally, regardless of whether they turned out European, Indian, black, or Asian looking.  In fact, the variety in their appearance serves to remind me just how mixed a race we are.

I hope there are others who feel the same way.

Alicia

Sylvia,

welcome to the group. . .look don't let me bother you too much about the deadline. If April 15 approaches and you are not ready just email me directly (makas@...) let me know you are not ready and how much more time you'll need and you will be "spared" the savageness of my axe swing. I'm trying to be reasonable and give people extra time if needed. then again some never communicate and won't submit and they of course will only feel my wrath come April 15th.

joseph

ps: about the virus thing you mentioned. . .one word: garlic; ajo. If you have an interest in what i'm talking about I can share how it will help you fight future bouts with the more typical virus' people comfront.

pps: cool message from Egypt to Yucatan to Zacatecas. . .as long as you tie it into Zacatecas I'd be interested in reading a little more about this. I for one would like to trace my DNA indicated Irish, Swedish, English, Jewish roots to my genealogical Mexican roots. Of course those other roots probably happened mega thousands of years ago and my genealogy is only back to about 1730 so far.

I in short am on the "bad girl" list for not yet posting my GEDOM
Data as of yet. I just lost my mother in law and have been fighting
one virus after another including, healing up my badly sprained
ankle. This is my #3 attempt to use this thing right! I am descended
from grandparents from Teocaltihe, Jalisco and Pinos, Zacactecas. I
have travelled to both towns and collected substantial data and books
from region. I have oral tradition of Judio customs from Zacatecas
side whose journey to Merida, Yucatan was from Egypt. The family
owned several cattle ranches, a hacienda in Pinos and meat markets
throughout Jalisco, Aguacalientes and Zacatecas. The Los Altos, side
which are in fact tall, 6 to 6'4" were artisans of leather.
