PRESS RELEASE, immediate: Press Conference, September 8th from 10-11 a.m.
Long Beach Performing Arts Center, 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach,
California.
Who is Bernardo de Galvez and why is he being rescued from the pages of
history?
What is the purpose of resurrecting the deeds of a Spanish historical figure
from the America Revolution, why now?
An Orange County, California group believes that the story needs to be told
now.
"It doesn't matter that is was over 200 years ago," says .Mimi Lozano, Chair
of the Bernardo de Galvez Project. "People read about the numbers of
Hispanics increasing throughout the nation. They feel invaded. They are frightened.
They don't know the history of the continual presence and support that
Hispanics have given to the United States, even before there was a United States.
This information is needed now."
Co-chair, Judge Fredrick Aguirre has organized annual event for seven years re
cognizing the deeds of Mexican-American Veterans. He said, "We have been
bringing out facts about the military contributions of Latinos in current
history, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, but the Galvez Project jumps way back, proving
Hispanic loyalty to the United States from its foundation."
Archaeologist, Dr. Jack Williams, Director of the Center for Spanish Colonial
Research will speak about those colonial foundations, as found in the
physical foundations of the San Diego Presidio. Dr. Williams will be accompanied by
a living history reenactor of Bernardo de Galvez, historian, Bruce Buonauro.
"The U.S. history has portrayed the Spanish soldiers as conquerors. They
were colonizers in every sense of the word, and among the best," say Dr.
Williams. "Without Spain's support, it is questionable if the colonists would have
been successful. We should be celebrating Bernardo de Galvez. He was, and is,
and should be recognized as an America hero."
On October 12th a free all-day celebration honoring Bernardo de Galvez and
his forces will be held at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center October 12th,
the Gálvez Concert and Gala. The day will end in a special performance by The
Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of Music Director,
Mexican maestro, Enrique Arturo Diemecke, the program will premiere two new arias,
commissioned and composed for the event.
The Concert starts at 3 p.m., but pre-concert music starts and 2 p.m.
and includes a brass quintet, and choir.
Complimentary Concert tickets are available in limited number.
