Thanks again for those census records.  I printed them all and found 
even more names that were already in my database!
To answer your question about getting the tilde to stay...you have to 
enter unicode characters.  You accomplish this by pressing and 
holding down the Alt key and enter (on the numeric pad with the Num 
Lock key on) 164 then release the Alt key.  There are other codes for 
accented vowels, such as, Alt+160 for á, Alt+161 for í, Alt+130 for 
é, etc.
