I just got off the phone with my aunt Emilia in New Mexico. She
called to thank me for the present I sent her, and as usual I started to pump
her about the family history. She is the last of her siblings (my Mother's
sister), the only relative of her generation I have left) and she is 92, but
sharp as a tack. We were discussing the fact that her grandmother could
read and write, which was unusual for a Hispanic woman born in 1865. My
aunt said my great-grandmother was very smart and talented, not only could read
and write, but could sew, cook, make wine, make preserves, and heal with
massages and herbs, among some of her talents. She was also a very devout
Catholic, and my aunt told me she still had her grandmother's prayer book, that
her grandmother would pray the (ten?) Tuesdays, and my aunt said she also uses
the prayer book to pray "the Tuesdays" (to Saint Anthony?).
Has anyone in the group ever heard of this practice of "praying the
Tuesdays"? I asked my husband about it, but he has never heard about
it. We have both heard of Novenas, where you pray to a Saint for nine days
straight, but not necessarily on Tuesdays.
