Rita Hayworth

Some members mentioned Rita Hayworth (Margarita Cansino), and I decided to write about her.
She was the daughter of Eduardo Cansino. He was a dancer born in Seville, Spain. In the Andalusia Region. He immigrated to America (New York) where he married. Margarita was born in New York city. Years later, the family moved to Tijuana, Mexico. Here, the father and Rita had a show called "The Dancing Cansinos". It was here where Rita was discovered and the rest is history .According with the family stories Eduardo was a "free spirit", and his father didn't like his chosen profession.

On my part, My grand mother Maria de los Angeles Cansino, was the daughter of Don Enrique Cansino. He was the brother of Eduardo's father. My great grandfather emigrated from Malaga, in the Andalusia region of Spain in 1880's. He relocated to Zacatecas, Mexico. He married my great grandmother who was from Jerez, Zacatecas. Genealogy that now I'm researching. My great grandfather left his whole family back in Spain.

Many years later,  another one of my grandmothers cousins arrived in Mexico after spending many years in Cuba. She was the daughter of another one of Don Enrique's brothers. Her name was "Tia Concha ". I actually met her when I was very young. She was also a Dancer with "El Ballet Folklorico Andaluz". She brought with her pictures of the family left in Spain. She showed the pictures to my mom and my grandmother. In one of the pictures was Eduardo very young and his father. On a sad note, Tia Concha died in 1970's.The pictures were left to her step-son who died unexpectedly shortly after and his wife burned these pictures. The only information that I have is what my grandmother , my mom and my aunt remembered. The pictures were not just family members also pictures of Seville and Malaga, home of the Cansinos.

I still don't know the origin of the last name Cansino. I found the last name in "Diccionario de apellidos Castellanos" but the oldest record in Spain is in the 1770's. But the last name in this "Diccionario" was "CANCINO".   It doesn't mention what happened before this date. I also found the last name Cansino in the Encyclopedia of Sephardic Last Names. Here the last name is written CANSINO. I found that  CANSINO Sephardic Jews  were in the Andalusia Region, coming from Morocco. They arrived to Spain in the 1600's. I know that many Cansinos left Spain, some moved to Gibraltar and others left to England. Both groups are practicing Jews to this day.

One interesting note about Rita. I'm sure she colored her reddish hair many times, but it is possible that her hair was originally this color. I have an uncle here in Mexico with reddish hair, and everyone wonder about the color. It was until "Tia Concha" saw him, she talked about the family in Spain with reddish hair.
In our home we have a black and white picture of Rita Hayworth  in our guest bath, and when our guest go the bathroom and inquire about the picture. My husband loves to say, She is " just Aunt Rita".
OK I guess by now you know more that you wanted to know about Rita Hayworth
