Below is a copy of what I found today on one of my ancestors in
Ancestry.com. The original entry in Ancestry.com that I printed out back
in August 2004 said "Extracted from documents in the Archivo General de Indias
in Seville, copies of which are among the holdings of the Family History Library
in Salt Lake City". Now I notice that this entry has that sentence
truncated after "copies of". I wonder why they did that? Did they
not want the public to know that the FHC has those records, or did the FHC make
them eliminate that part? They only give some book as a resource.
That time that I tried to navigate the AER online, I got as far as getting
a password and I pulled up any old record, and it was amazing! The actual
photo of the document from the 1500s appeared on the screen and it had all kinds
of info, but the destination was also "Nuevo Espana" (like in the one below) not
any particular state in Mexico because there probably weren't any states yet.
When I tried to find my particular surnames, I had no luck in navigating to
that point (too mensa). Only Ancestry.com gets me to my surnames, but
alas, they don't have the actual scans of the AER documents.
