I'm going to DC on the 24 for the Hispanic Family History Symposium.
I'm going to record Mr. Ryskamp and at least one other Archivist for my
Podcast project (http://NuestrosRanchos.net). Its possible that I might
interview him that day. . .thanks to Mickey Garcia who asked him if he
would let me interview him (thanks Mickey).
Can you all think of any other questions. . .so far here are my
questions with 3 of yours:
Members of the Ranchos group were interested in these first three
questions:
Are there any school or other institution projects to motivate children to get interested in family
history and research?
Are there are any kind of statistics or failure/success rates for
genealogy researchers in terms of a generation count? In other words,
what can the average genealogist realistically expect to find from
available sources?
Are you taking on new clients and what are your rates?
My questions:
When using FHC's for research the temptation is to stay with baptism, birth, marriage, death and matrimonial
Informacion records. What would you say are the most valuable but under used records available through the LDS library
and/or other archives?
What other archives would be best to use in specific research for Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Chihuahua? Are there
US Archives that have significant holdings on these states?
In the Arch Diocese of Guadalajara there are many interesting records that would take a life time to go through.
Sangrada Mitra marriage dispensation records. . .Notary records. . .Land and water records. . .Priest Ordination records
and many other misc. records. How many of these groups of records would you be comfortable commenting on? Of them I
would especially like to hear some comments about Notary records?
Do you have any bibliographical sources for some of the above record groups?
Where would a person find "experts" on these record groups? There are many univerisities that are doing scholarly work
it would be great if there were a directory or a research aid to find the best person, group or university about specific
record groups.
When is it time to use a professional researcher?
How do you evaluate a professional researcher?
When doing research in Mexico is it best to find a professional researcher from that locality?
I've heard it said that one could hire a professional researcher to help you find general information
sources as opposed to specific genealogy research. What is your opinion of this?
Do you know of professional researchers for the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Chihuahua?
other questions I haven't thought of yet.
thanks again. . .joseph
