Jose,
My father also immigrated in 1920 at the age of 7years
old. He along with his brother (age 6) arrived with their mother
Concepcion Tato Chiono. They settled in Santa Clara, California
Jul 1914, Concepcion Tato b. Banamichi, Sonora,
Mexico, married Pietro Chiono b. Italy, who was in charge of the silver mine
in Banamichi. In 1917 Concepcion Tato lost her daughter Ma. Antonia
CHIONO when she fell out of a high chair. Her husband Pietro CHIONO (my
grandfather) died Dec 1918 and her father Candelario TATO died Nov 1919
both from the 1918 flu epidemic. Concepcion Tato knew that she was not
well, so with a very heavy heart she immigrated to the United States in 1923
with her two sons, my father and his brother. She was a brave woman and
wanted a better life for her sons. They settled in Santa Clara,
California where they were befriended by Henry Warburton and his wife
Matilda Warburton. Concepcion knew that she was ill and asked that the
Warburton's take care of her two sons when she died. We all
thought Concepcion died of diabetes complications, since quite a few of the
family has diabetes. After years of trying to read the doctor's
handwriting on her death certificate, I finally realized that a pharmacist
probably is the only person who could read a doctor's handwriting.
The pharmacist also speaks and reads Spanish, so this coming trip to Salt Lake
City, Rich and I plan on working on death
records. Conception died of "Acute Adhesive Peritonitis" or
inflammation of the abdominal lining. Probably left over from the flu
epidemic.
My father Domingo CHIONO was raised by the Warburton
family, went to Saint Clara' elementary school and Santa Clara High
School. (Not too far from your high school Jose Munoz) The
Warburton's business was making Tamales and Enchiladas. They started the
business in 1904 in Santa Clara These were the large 12 oz size
'California Style' tamales. The enchiladas were made with flour
tortillas, quite different from Rich's side of the family from
Jalisco. Joseph, this is why we have made so many "Tamales Making
Trips" lately. Utah, Santa Cruz Mtns. etc. We are trying to spread
the family recipe around to our cousins.
The 1930 Census for Santa Clara shows my father and
uncle as 'charges' for the Henry J. Warburton and
Matilda. Dad met my mother Aileen Kelso in high
school and married in 1940. My brother, sister and I also attended Saint
Clara's elementary school in Santa Clara, but then moved to Mountain View were
we attend Mt. View High School. (Now we are really getting closer
Jose) We also spent a lot of time at Stevens Creek Dam, also
called Permanente Creek. We collected great big wash tubs of pollywogs and
brought them home. Took us years of trying to figure out how come we came
out with only one BIG frog instead of many little frogs.
It has been a very interesting trip learning the little
differences from Rich's Jalisco, Zacatecas side of the family and my Sonora side
of the family. When we go to small Mexican Restaurants we try to determine
what State of Mexico the owners came from. Here in Rocklin we have a
restaurant Jalisco Grill so of course we were not surprised that the owners came
from Jalisco, but when we were in Arizona last year we tried a Mexican
restaurant and when those thin large 24" tortillas came out I immediately asked
where the cooks came from and sure enough, they were from Sonora.
It wasn't until the 1980s when my brother (at the time
a policeman for Concord, California) was on duty and passed a mailbox with the
name of Domenic Chiono. Too much of a coincidence to have the exact name
as our father. Sure enough this Domenic is a first cousin to my Dad.
All this time, Dad was raised as an orphan with no relatives and just 50 miles
away his father's sister lived and raised a large family. What a
celebration it was for Dad to have family. We still keep in touch with
this Italian side of the family.
Rich and I have made 3 month long trips to Banamichi,
Sonora. During these trips, we would follow my father thru the mines and
ghost town, Bavicanora, where he was raised.
Now we communicate with Banamichi families with
e-mail. How times have changed.

Evarista Galvan Tristan the first child was born October 26, 1886, and on February 05, 1905, married Jose Angel Ybarra Munoz, in la Yglesia de la Hacienda Solis. Evarista and Jose Angel left the Hacienda de Solis approximately a year after their son Elpidio T. Munoz was born {March 04,1906], and prior to Juana T. Munoz birth March 15,1908, in La Cinta, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Jose Angel Munoz, and Evaristan Tristan remained in Nuevo Leon until 1920. After his youngest daughter, Primitiva, death June 04, 1907, Francisco Tristan left the Hacienda de Solis. Date of departure are uncertain. The death of Primitiva and the Mexican Revolucion erupting were certainly some of the motives that motivated Francisco Tristan and his family away from the Hacienda de Solis. One fact is certain. Francisco left San Luis Potosi after June 1907 and went to Mineral del Refugio, Lampazos, Nuevo Leon. They lived in Mineral Del Refugio, 6 years from 1907-1913, a mineral mining town. Francisco possibly labored in the mines. His son-in-law, JOSE ANGEL MUNOZ, would later follow in the same manner. Francisco's decision to leave Mineral Del Refugio, in Nuevo Leon, came in 1913 during the worse period of the Revolucion. FRANCISCO TRISTAN DIARY: written in "Spanish" by Francisco Tristan{December 13, 1861} and his son Lorenzo Tristan{September 06, 1896}. My father, as your father, was a foreman in Mountain View from 1950 thru Feb, 26,1968, @ Ira M. Higgins {died 1965 in a tomato field}, and his wife Elaine {1986 ?} Ranch. The ranch neighbor was San Francis High School. The school's Baseball and Footbal field were named in Mr. Higgins honor. My father helped erect the school baseball backstop in 1958. Beautiful landscape, orchards, and plenty of space. Its all gone now. Cueasta Park was once a orchard of prunes and apricots. I lived in Los Altos/Mt. View on Alegre street. If you are in that area, Covington and Miramontes, 1061 Alegre Street dead ends at Permanete Creek ...but!,,,the house no longer exist. Thanks for sharing. Brings forward many memories. I apologize for last leg of tree's. My MUNOZ 5th, and 6th great were from Hacienda de Banon, Burgo de San Cosme, Villa de Cos, Zacatecas, Mexico. I'm stranded there with Ysidro Munoz and Toribia Dorothea de Torres.
