OK, I think your name is Joanna and if it's not I'm sure you will let us know. You start the way we all have started, asking many questions. You have to ask not only your mother but any aunts and uncles about a little family history. Where your ancestors have lived, names of relatives but especially grandparents and great grandparents if possible. Many times birth certificates list the grandparents so if you have any birth certificates for parents or grandparents you can begin there to get names, surnames and localities.
Once you have some names, dates and places you log onto www.familysearch.org. When this comes up click on the search tab located at the top of the page. Next you will see a form that asks for first name and last name. Fill in the names you know. In the slot below look in the drop down menu that says country and search for Mexico and click on it. You can enter as much or as little information of your choosing and if the database finds a name that's similar to your entry it will bring up a series of similar names with the applicable dates, events, and localities. Find the date, the event such as birth, marriage, death etc and locality.
Play with the site and try different name combinations, dates and locations just to become familiar with the website. Eventually it should take you to the IGI database for your specific area of research. Good Luck
