Good morning, Mimi, I'm working on a Family Tree Magazine article about genealogical societies. I've visited your SHAAR site and couldn't find information about becoming a member--what are the annual membership dues? Thank you, Diane
Dear Diane:
I think our organization is quite different in many respects. We dropped our membership dues five years ago, January 2000 when we went online with our publication, Somos Primos (We are cousins). I've been publisher/editor of Somos Primos since we started publishing it as a quarterly in 1990.
We dropped the dues which attracted local participation, and went online to increase the outreach of our message, that all Hispanic researchers are essentially cousins.
We encourage networking by including the emails of individuals that submit articles, referring new researchers to experienced researchers based on the region of their interest. We also have an online networking database, which can be accessed for free and a calendar of events. All can be linked from our homepage http://www.SHHAR.org
We have a board of nine people. The cost of running our organzation is minimal, primarily through royalties on some of our print publications, and member donations.
We have met our goal of international connections. We have readership from all over the world.
Anyone that wants to be kept up to date with our activities can request to be notified when the latest issue of somos Primos is online, for free. http://www.somosprimos.com
Please feel welcomed to ask any other questions.
