Re: Valparaiso, Zacatecas

Joseph,

I do not know of any Roman ties. However, I would be very interested
in knowing how the haciendas functioned and how they were structured
in terms of people, if you know such data.

I do know that the Felguerez haciendas in Valparaiso and Colotlan
appeared to work closely together, even though it appears to me that
one part of the family "worked" one and another part of the family
"worked" the other. I uploaded an article into the Valparaiso photo
folder describing in Spanish the extent of the Felguerez land holdings
in the Colotlan and Valparaiso area (see paragraph 3 of the Cerro de
Gallegos jpg file). I estimate the haciendas comprised approximately
1500 sq. miles, assuming square plots of land, which may not be the
case. Near as I can tell, in 1910 Mexico was owned by 1000 families
and 1/4 of Mexico was owned by 200 of them.

My grandfather, Jose Cruz Cerros, likely worked on the Felguerez
haciendas. My grandmother, Maria Felguerez, was the illegitimate
daughter of one of the Felguerez. Maria's mother was Valenta Pinedo, a
servant in one of the ranchos, possibly Penablanca or El Astillero. In
reviewing birth records from Valparaiso, I found many Pinedos.

The Felguerez family was in charge of most birth records in Valparaiso
for decades, signing most of these municipal records.

Ed
