Victor, that sounds logical. I had thought of that also, but in
the example given, the grandparents surname names didn't match either surname of
the father.

I will venture my opinion regarding this matter. I
haven't found any similar record but this is my opinion.
I believe both names refer to
the same person, Jose Maria Miramontes and Telesforo Gutierrez. But the
scribe, unwilling to act against his conscience and being in any way
untruthful, he decided to write the person's baptismal given name and the
person's self-declared, newly (for whatever reasons) adopted name.
Besides, the church's sacramental books were privy objects, or so they thought
at that time, so who would question?.

Apparently parenthesis is used to denote that a mistake was made when entering
the informaion.
