Oral History

if anyone in the group wants to submit a short audio clip of some of their families oral history for my podcast please send it to. I'm not wanting just conversations but right to the point accounts of what happened:

the submissions should be in digital format but if they must I can handle an audio cassette and no more than about 20-30 minutes long. the following is for interviews if you are doing it over the phone, but some would apply to a live recording:

hints---

1) if you are using a tape recorder you will get a better recording if you use batteries rather than plug into the electricity which creates additional background noise. But if you can find someone with a digital recorder even if its just as a loan for a day that would be great. Let me know about which type you will use because you will then need to take it to your local electronics store: Frys, Radio Shack, other to find the best way of hooking into your phone line for a recording.

2) try to set things up for success and pick a spot that will give you privacy and as much background quiet as possible

3) give a copy of your ahead of time so they can be reviewed. You don't have to stick slavishly to the questions but at least the general direction will be known. Also ask the question or make the statement: "These is the list of questions I had in mind, but if you would like to add to or take from the questions please modify. Your comfort level is my first goal in getting a good interview."

4) When interviewing or if he is just reading or talking into the microphone be relaxed but follow this procedure. If a mistake is made or if he or you feel a certain part could have been better then just stop and be absolutely silent for

"A FULL 3 SECONDS"

this will appear on the recording and will be easy for me to find during editing. In that time get your thoughts together and start right in at the beginning of the part you felt needed to be redone, no need to start from the very beginning. Explain that to your interviewee so they know that it will be easy to fix if he thinks a certain part could have been said better or if he misspeaks to a significant degree.  When I do "My Magic" it will be so so easy to edit out the bad part if you really give me the most important "FULL 3 SECONDS."

5) Since you will most likely be doing a book review or combination book review/general history of the area then he might want to do a reading or two from his book. okay great, but what I don't want is for the whole interview to be nothing but one long reading. If he really wants and you also have to decide he could take the table of contents of this book or others on this topic and go over them one by one giving an overview of what is inside giving selected reading. But all that is just an idea, the actual interview will have to be negotiated between the two of you
