Esperanza,
Thanks for your feedback in this matter. Instead of discarding or
admitting any and all possibilities of those Villarreales in the AGN
documents below from being related to me, let me briefly describe what
is the current status of my research.
The first thing to clarify is an erroneous entry in Danny's page
regarding Diego de Villarreal's place of origin. It should say
Allende El Grande, Guanajuato, instead of Allende El Grande, Oaxaca.
That alone, assuming there's a document (yet to be found) to base that
affirmation, changes the whole perspective of the documents you quote.
As to the several Francisco de Villarreales (actually just two) that
could be related to Diego, one of them appears in old records (1570s -
1580s) from Saltillo, Coahuila, accompaning the colonizer Francisco de
Urdiñola. The other Francisco de Villarreal is quoted in the record
#314079 below. He was a "contador del Tribunal de Cuentas de la
ciudad de Mexico" in the early 1600s who had to do with the inspection
of the mining operations in Zacatecas of the time.
The connection made to the Francisco from Saltillo is based on the
proximity of places, dates and historical characters common to him and
Diego de Villarreal. I don't know yet of any primary source
manuscript that explicitly documents that relationship. The town
chronicler of El Carmen, Nuevo León, told me that there's a chance
that their relation could also be that of brothers just as easily as
father-son.
The link to the other Francisco de Villarreal from Zacatecas is based
on the "mining connection", as we know that Diego eventually was
dedicated to silver mining operations in Nuevo León. And, as we
previously mentioned, he was also in Zacatecas with Martín de Zavala.
Another possible piece of the puzzle is a Juan de Villarreal, founder
of an Hacienda in the state of Tlaxcala in 1594. The significance of
Tlaxcala is that it was from here that 400 Tlaxcaltecan families were
selected by Francisco de Urdiñola to travel with him to colonize
Saltillo. Along with the 400 families and Mr. Urdiñola were many
other individuals, including Francisco de Villarreal. I'm inclined to
believe that this is a more plausible migration path for the
Villarreales. Tlaxcala, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Nuevo León. But I'm in
no rush to conclusions for the sake of expediency. I'd rather die
ignoring the truth than believing a lie.
There's still much to keep us busy. Don't you think? Good luck with
your Herrera investigation. Please keep us posted of any breakthroughs!
