Have you tried another variant? Guarana? marge:)

Hello Victor,
I have searched the surname Grana but found nothing. I do know that Jose Adalberto Garana was born in 1873 and that his first child was born in 1905. That leads me to believe that he probably married @ 1904. Of course, I recall once when he made my grandmother angry, she accused him of being Cuban. But, searching Cuba didn't help. Yesterday, I had an e-mail from a person who said that a Garrana had gone from Malta to Lebanon and then possibly to Mexico. I am working on that.
I have one other possibility. Maybe I can find information through the Jesuits. There may be a central house in Mexico that would have membership files. I have that as one of my tasks. In fact, that may be the only way to find him. I really suspect that Garana was not his real name at all or it may have been his mother's name. My grandfather was so intelligent, so educated, so aristocratic and very difficult to get along with and his past seemed obsured by vagueness and mystery.
I also tried Spain. I made a three month trip through Europe some years ago with the intention of searching everywhere. Finally in Barcelona I found a family who had a resonable account. They had heard of two brothers, Basques, with the Garana surname who went to Mexico. One died immediately, the other remained in Mexico. I have since tried to make contact with them again but they have not responded. And there was one other source in Cadiz. An elderly attorney. But by the time I neared Cadiz I was so tired and burned out. The heat was too much and I hurried back to cooler country.
One day I'll get a break.
I will keep trying and thanks for the suggestion.

Mary,
I guess this is just an idle question, but have you searched the
surname Grana and/or Grama?
Also, if the person in question was associated with the Augustinians
and the Jesuits, have you considered the possibility that he was not
born in México but elsewhere?
Just some thoughts!

You'll also find my brother Edward placing similar notices everywhere.
We have been doing this for years and years with no results.
