Joseph,
Please don't put this in the mail to the group.
I don't want it to be construed as casting aspersions on the person
being considered for the research job. However, you may post those parts that
you think won't affect anyone. I have had work done by other genealogists
in Mexico and had really bad experiences. I tend to agree with Mickey Garcia.
Know the people you are dealing with first.
Regarding stipends: In Mexico, it is really not
customary to pay ahead for work. You risk not getting the work done.
I advise you to get in touch with people from the
La Familia Group (genealogy research) out of Los Angeles area. I think
they have done exactly what you are suggesting with varied experiences. (I
am aware that some people got badly burned and weren't to keen on it being
known). Some guy was selling over and over the information he had
gathered before for a client and telling them he had researched it for
them. I would get their opinion before I committed.
Check with Aaron and Sylvia at this address aaronsyl@.... they organize
research trips to Mexico and they have extensive connections with genealogists
and state archivists.
Also, please, please, check with Benicio
Samuel Sanchez Garcia. Benicio does travel around the country of Mexico
and he has contacts through other genealogical associations as well
as through his Church's contacts. He also gives you updates every so often if he
does or has someone do it for you.
Benicio is from Torreon, Coahuila and has gone to Jerez before to do
genealogy research. I think he knows a number of the people mentioned in
this series of e-mails. I trust his opinion.
This gentleman has impeccable credentials
(this one I can vouch for), He is honest, he is a Mormon who takes family
research extremelly serious. Most of his colaborators are also Mormons, so
you know for sure they will do an honest job to the best of their
ability. (Sorry about mentioning religion - I usually don't like to bring
that up on an unrelated subject, however, I simply am trying to impress
upon you that the man is honest. Also, I am not a Mormon) This is the
gentleman who helped me get the records filmed for San Juan de Guadalupe,
Durango. He and associates did everything and now the records are available to
the public.
He would be a great interviewee for your programs.
You can contat him at the address below.

Joseph,
Jose Luis took the words right out of my
mouth! :-) I was also thinking the same thing.......if we,
those that are interested, each contribute a certain amount of $$$, would
Senor Leonardo de la Torre Berumen do research for us? I met Senor de la
Torre a few years ago in Jerez and he is a very nice person, very
knowledgeable......and a very sharing person. I would not hesitate to
have him do research for me. I really believe we are on to a good thing
here......

Joseph; With enough interested parties, $100 may not be
necessary. I know a family that contributes $25 each to do their family line
per month. If there was a coordinated effort to line up all parties/surnames
and locations then it would be possible for the searcher to do each line and
make a good living. Do you agree ? I wonder if this is a practicable
suggestion. Arturo may be on to something and if it works out then a link will
have been established that we all can follow. We would need to see the film
documentation or it would be valueless. I would like to hear your take on
the matter as I think that this could blossom.

Arturo what do you suppose a figure would be for this monthly
stipend? Are you thinking that several of us that might be interested
could contribute to come up with this monthly stipend? Did you get an idea
of what he was talking about?
I wonder how many hours of research
$100 would buy me? Well that is all I'd be willing to contribute. I have a
dead end in Zacatecas, Zacatecas I need "advice" in knowing how to get
around.
let me know if you think this would buy me something and if so
I'll send you 5 scanned records that will give you the information he will
need to do my preliminary
investigation.

Although I am very flattered I do not wish to be

Also, just want to add a little about the monthly
'stipend' on the man from Jerez. He is a very good
source. who was the good source? El señor de la
Torre or your person who suggested not going the 'stipend'
way?
thanks,
joseph
I have talked to someone who is very well versed in
research from Mexico and it was suggested that you be careful in a 'monthly
stipend'. It is better to order a specific job and get that done
instead of a stipend.
