Joseph,
I wrote to Arturo yesterday after he contacted me directly. See below. Please take into
consideration that my personality is such that I tend to be distrustful and impatient.
Anyway...
Arturo,
Yes, I have been in contact in the past with Leonardo de la Torre Berumen and with
another researcher, Bernardo del Hoyos. The former is well-known and I have found many
historical articles authored by him in the Jalisco/Zacatecas area of Mexico. Miguel
Escobedo, an attorney from Mexico City, see http://www.noriegayescobedo.com.mx/
socios_escobedo.htm, has used both of these people and has spoken of them highly.
Miguel's family were large land owners in Jalisco, e.g. Monte Escobedo is named after his
ancestors. I fortuitously began to communicate with Miguel via a message board inquiry.
Miguel's sister, Helen, is a famous artist in Mexico and is known to Manuel Felguerez, one
of my relatives.
I include correspondences that I have had previously with Leonardo and Joseph Puentes at
the bottom of this email. I have since confirmed my Felguerez roots and I have dated them
back to Asturias, Spain in the late 1700's.
Having said that, I have had trouble trying to get an exact price for Leonardo's services
and have hesitated. Furthermore, he has misinterpreted what I wanted---probably
because my Spanish is not where it should be. My new-found Felguerez relatives in Mexico
have warned me repeatedly about paying up front when you do anything in Mexico but I
see no way around it in a matter such as this.
Given all the above, I personally have decided to try to use George Ryskamp when I finally
say basta. I tried to use Ryskamp 1 year ago but he did not respond to me for 6-9 months.
I finally got a response when he had a break in his jobs. I may try again but I am sure it is
going to be slow and more expensive. Somehow, I feel that I have more control here in the
USA than Mexico. Mr. Ryskamp, near as I can figure, has access to the same archives or
can get them.
Leonardo de la Torre, who wrote to me last week looking for work, is probably fine. I
would just make sure the finances are well-worked out in advance. I tried to meet him
during a trip to Zacatecas in April 2005 but we could not make it work. If you speak
Spanish fluently and are going down to Mexico, you are in excellent position to make a
decision. I simply ran out of time when I was down there. For genealogy purposes, a trip
lasting 1-2 weeks would be good.
I hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can help. If you want me to accept half the risk, i.e.
pay half the amount, for Ramos and Serros data, I would consider it. Money is not a major
issue for me; I just want to avoid hassles and run-arounds.
Saludos,
Ed
