Yes, Leticia,
I also try all the known surnames that a person has been known to
use. Step-mother or step-father's name, the mother's or the grand-mother's
maiden name, etc. For example, my husband's great-great grandmother was
"hija natural de Ramona Ornelas". Her son, Simon Garcia said her surname
was Gonzalez, which I think was her father or step-father, but mostly she used
Ornelas or De Leon in the baptism records for her children or for her marriage
record. I don't know yet where she got the De Leon.
Other times I just use different spellings or leave off the "s" at the end
of a name, or change an "e" to an "I", etc. When I use the IGI, I just
type in one very simple surname, like Serros or Cerros and do not check off the
"exact spelling", and it gives me all the different versions of that name:
Del Cerro, Serro, Serros, Cerros, Cerro, so my fingers just fly over the
keyboard and I find myself using the "refine search" to get to the particular
state, then I look at everything for that state. Sometimes I add Jose or
Maria to the first name, sometimes I leave that out. I can't keep up with
myself when I am searching the resources available on the Internet, one path
leads me to another very quickly when I am "on a roll" so to speak, so when
someone asks me how I did it, I don't remember. I am always looking at
surname message boards, state records, Social Security records, the trees on
World Connect, and I subscribe to most of the data bases available on
Ancestry.com. I do this because I cannot travel to Mexico, or speak
Spanish well enough to communicate to someone there; if I could, I would be
calling people in Mexico all the time and maybe then I would get somewhere
sooner in my research, since then I could get information directly from
"cronistas', librarians, genealogists, etc.

Emilie: just an idea: sometimes I (you maybe already
did) do the search using the second apelative of the person insted
of the first one Leticia Leon
Well, John and Helyn,
My father and his mother continue to elude me, but maybe they are
helping me to help others. Little voices just keep telling me to look
in the state death records or in the IGI under different spellings. I
cannot recreate how I do it; it seems to be intuitive. Now if I could
only get that inspiration on my own elusive relatives. By the way,
John, you may be on your way to finding the Cerros all the way back to
Spain. The original name was Del Cerro over there. Doesn't
"cerro" mean "mountain"?

I agree with you about Emilie, she is one of the
Angels.
This year, Emilie, broke through the ole adobe wall,
and cleared the way for my Robles line. I had been attempting to find
this line for about 8 years. Prior to the inception of the Rancho Group,
Emilie also made assisted me with my Magallanas line...I second the
motion.![]()

If we had a prize or title "Researcher of the
Year" I would certainly nominate you for it. The
things you do are nothing short of AMAZING.!!!
That IS my grandfather from Pánuco,
Zacatecas. I knew it the instant I saw the last
name "Godina".
Thank you.

John,
Have you seen this entry in the Family Search IGI for a
Prisciliano Cerro Godina born in Panuco? If this is yours, then
the Gods are still with you.
