My grandparents were cousins in six different ways.  All at the 6th 
and 7th degree level, but six nevertheless.

I read somewhere that one of the impetuses to intermarriage was to 
keep landholdings contiguous and/or large enough to be useful, as 
inheritence traditions dictated land being distributed among the 
children (including women) and thus the plots would get smaller and 
smaller and more and more dispersed unless you married a cousin 
(knowlingly or unknowingly) who had inherited the land next to yours.
