Re: [ranchos] Hermenegildo

Ray and Joseph,

I asked my mother who was raised in Mexico about Gil and Gila, and she said Gil was short for Gilberto and Gila was most likely a shortened version of Hermeregilda, but she was unsure about Gil being a contraction of Hermeregildo (what a tongue-twister) or Mergil.

HERMENEGILDO   m   Spanish, Portuguese
Spanish and Portuguese form of a Gothic name which meant "complete sacrifice" from Germanic ermen "whole, entire" and gild "sacrifice".

I need some help in clarifying what appears to be variations in the
given names Gil and Gila. Is Gil a contraction of Mergil and/or
Hermeregildo? Is Gila a contraction of Hermeregilda? I have a
number of people found in different records whom I need to determine
if they are the same person but recorded with a variation of name.
Has anyone a difinitive answer?
