Alice Wissing: Introducing Myself

Hello Everybody,

My name is Alice Wissing and I'm introducing myself to the group. Before I say anything else, I want to tell Steve Apodaca, another
newcomer, how fortunate he is to be in his early 20's and
researching his family.

I'll Amen that. I'm 50 and if I had started when I was 20 I could have talked to my mother, father, grandmother, even some really old folks that were alive at that time. ooooh, just thinking about all that oral history that passed before I got interested. If I had one word of advice it would be "ORAL HISTORY." (well I guess thats two). Remember these old records we're finding have been sitting there waiting for us to come dig them up but with every generation that passes the oral history passes with them and it is unrecoverable. . .forever lost. the stories and really important stuff about who we are is gone. Steve, Alice, all. . .go for the oral history.

I wish I had started at such a young age,
as it has been an empowering experience for me to discover the
specifics about my origins. Until I started this research, I was
under the impression my father's family had just "sprouted" on the
Mexican side of town, but now, thanks to the Mormons, Mariano Leal
and members of this group, I'm finding out otherwise.

My father's family originated in San Juan de Los Lagos and
Jalostotitlan. My maiden name is Campos and the surnames I'm
researching on my father's paternal side appear in both areas and
are as follows: Campos (Martin Del Campo, Martin), Munos, Ramires,
Marquez, Padilla, Barba, and Lozano.

Throug! h my grandmother's side, I have an extensive tree that a
cousin prepared that dates back to the mid 1500's in a few cases. Because I haven't viewed records to support her research, I need to
know if I should hold off on providing that information (I'm pretty
confident the work will be accurate - she's smart, a Sorbonne
graduate even).

Hey I think we are all responsible to verify research that others have done. That is the whole idea of why I started this group. So many people are on rootsweb looking for others that have done the research, trying to tie into that work, and then show how great genealogist they are by all they have found.

my number one prerequisite for joining this group is to "do your own work." That definitely means verifying anything we find when we view the files that we see in the files area of the group via the second prerequisite "send in your genealogy." So having said all that I have no problem with you sending in that work since we know that a serious researcher is going to verify, and of course we all know that verifying could be a work in progress that could take many years. Send it in. if you want to add a note that you haven't verified it well that would be better. I think no one can accuse of not have been fairly warned!

wow, the 1500's!!!

With my Campos research, I'm having difficulty tracing the name, as
it seems to constantly change (from Campos to Martin Del Campo, back
to Campos, then to Martin). Does anyone know if there is any rhyme
or reason to how it evolved?
Before I submit a tree I'd like to do a little more research. I ask
that Joe have mercy on me and allow me a little more time.

that hurts. . . . .

. . . yes, sure, take whatever time you need, i don't believe in rushing genealogy, even if it were possible.
