okay. . .
let me just say there are many answers to that question. But as a
fairly new researcher I can give you how I and many others are
extracting data.
first you go to www.familysearch.org and look around the home page very
well. familiarize yourself with the tremendous wealth of free
genealogical information available on this site.
then you click on "Library" at the top and then on the next window
click on "Family History Centers."
Fill out the form finding the FHC closest to you then get your car keys
and cruise over to the location closest to you. go in and ask questions
and find out if there are any unlisted FHC's in the area. If you have
several FHC's in your area visit them all and see which is best as far
as location, hours, and services offered [note: i've heard of some mini
FHC's that only had computer banks with no film readers available].
okay then after you've got your location visited and selected choose
and order some films.
back at www.familysearch.org do a place search with the name of the
Rancho, Municipio or Cabecera of where your relatives lived in Mexico.
For example let's look at Tlaltenango, Zacatecas.
from the home page go to "Library" again and this time click on
"Family History Library Catalog" then click on "Place" and you'll get
this information:

Note: this only shows 50 of the 212 films available
At this point you just choose which films by determining the time
period you think your relatives lived in Tlaltenango. Then rush back to
the FHC and order the films. When they come in spend some intimate time
viewing the films.
You have to pay $3.50 for the first 30 days and $3.25 for the next 60
and then $3.25 to keep the film at that FHC permanently but you can
only view the films at the FHC as they can't leave the premises.
Also I would not order to many films at once because the best way to do
your research is to go from record to record looking for your direct
line relatives and all the auxiliary branches and this can be time
consuming. Do a thorough job and you'll "KNOW" you are right.
Paraphrasing what Steven Hernandez says 'never base your work on only
one record' always establish your work on multiple records.
So what other ways do all you Rancheritos y Rancheritas use to extract
your data? Diganos como hacen sus investigaciones.

I was just wondering, how are you all "extracting" data? How do you
do it?
Thanks.
