Zapotlanejo, Marriages

I have been extracting various marriages from Zapotlanejo, Jalisco.  I've been doing this ever since I discovered I had roots in that town.  Unfortunately, it's going to be harder than I thought.  There are huge gaps in the baptism and marriage archives.  There are no baptisms between 1708 and 1726, and there are no marriage films between 1743 and 1768, and up to 1776, and even some beyond, do not mention the names of the novios' parents.  Bummer!  I'll have to rely on every other scrap of information I could possibly get my hands on: padrones, dispensas, bautismos, defunciones, and marriages.

For María Cortez, I've had in mind a message you once sent me regarding some of the surnames I have from Zapotlanejo, which include Alvarez, Nuño, Regalado, Cortés, Vásquez, Gómez, and others.

Hola Paco,

It just so happens that I do have an Alvarez line from Zapotlanejo.
I haven't looked at any films from Zapotlanejo, but I have a
marriage record from Ixtlahuacán del Río for my twice 4th great-
grandmother Gertrudis Alvarez that says she was born in Zapotlanejo
and grew up in Tescatitán. Gertrudis was born about 1771 to parents
Nicolás Alvarez and María de la Ó Vizcarra. Let me know if we have a
link.

Maria Cortez

Well María, I found the marriage record of your ancestors.  On 20 Jan 1775, in Acta Nº 224, "Don Nicolás Alvarez español originario y vecino del Durasno" and "Doña María Paulina Biscarra, española, vecina y originaria de la Hacienda de Miraflores" were married.  Unfortunately their parents were not mentioned at all, nor their ages.  The padrinos were Juan Bautista and Eusebia Anastasia, with no last names.  Source: Microfilm # 0218345, Marriages, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco.  Since there were only some scanty clues, and subtracting a standard 21 years for the ages of males when married, I deduce your Nicolás Alvarez was born around 1753 or maybe 1754.

I have found other references to Alvarez people from El Durasno in the marriage documents. Given the age of 18 he declared, he would have been born in either 1761 or 1762, becuase his 1780 marriage was in the beginning of the year.  The padrinos in the marriage of Joseph Teodoro Alvarez and Ma. Marcela Camacho were José María Alvarez and María Gertrudis Arámbulo.

Another one is the 26 Nov 1780 marriage of "Joseph Marcelo Alvarez, español originario y vecino del Durasno, de 24 años de edad (born in 1756), h.l. de Francisco Alvarez y Antonia Nuño."  Joseph Marcelo Alvarez married "Juana Gertrudis García, española de las Cuchillas, de 18 años de edad, hija natural de Marta Manuela García."  Their marriage padrinos were "Phelipe Nuño y Rosalía Alvarez."  By the looks of it, the padrinos are both related to the groom, and to both María and myself.

Yet another, is Joseph Norberto Alvarez. The padrinos were "Marcos Ornelas y D.a Ma. Bernarda Alvarez." Source: Foja 173 frente & vuelta.

There are other Alvarez's in Zapotlanejo, but those other ones are from different Ranchos, and none of them were children of Francisco Alvarez and Ma. Antonia Nuño.  In fact the only Alvarezes I have seen thus far from El Rancho del Durasno were all children of Francisco Alvarez and Ma. Antonia Nuño.  Based on this evidence, I can safely conclude that your ancestor Nicolás Alvarez was also a son of Francisco Alvarez and Ma. Antonia Nuño.

So basically this family was comprised as follows:

Francisco ALVAREZ Born: ca 1730 in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco
+María-Antonia NUÑO Born: ca 1732 in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Married: ca 1751 in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco

1   Nicolás ALVAREZ Born: ca 1754 in El Durasno, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco
...  +María-Paulina de la O VIZCARRA Born: ca 1760 in Miraflores, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Married: 20 January 1775 in La Purísima Concepción, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Father: Pedro Antonio VIZCARRA Mother: Anna María HERRERA
2   Joseph-Marcelo ALVAREZ Born: 1756 in El Durasno, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco
...  +Juana Gertrudis GARCÍA Born: 1762 in Las Cuchillas, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Married: 26 November 1780 in La Purísima Concepción, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco  Mother: Marta Manuela GARCÍA
3   Joseph-Norberto ALVAREZ Born: 1759 in El Durasno, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco
...  +Manuela NUÑO Born: 1767 in Las Cuchillas, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Married: 06 October 1783 in La Purísima Concepción, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco Father: Pedro NUÑO Mother: Gregoria GARCÍA
4   Joseph-Teodoro ALVAREZ Born: 1761 in El Durasno, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco
...  +María-Marcela CAMACHO  Married: 31 January 1780 in La Purísima Concepción, Zapotlanejo, Jalisco

I have only found one Viscarra/Biscarra/Vizcarra/Bizcarra marriage in Zapotlanejo around this time period, Juan Joseph Pioquinto Viscarra.  Given the rarity of the surname, which is OBVIOUSLY Basque, and the fact that your Ma. Paulina de la O Viscarra was from Miraflores, we can be sure that they were siblings. Source Foja 132 frente.  Their padrinos were "Pedro Antonio y Ana María."  Although no last names were given, I am tentatively assuming that they were the groom's parents.  I also saw other Biscarras, but I had forgotten the last name and to look for them, so I did not write the others in my notes, but they are there.  I looked up Pedro Antonio Viscarra and Anna María Herrera, and could find no children, but did find their marriage.  According to www.familysearch.org, they were married on 19 March 1759, in Tonalá (Source: Microfilm # 0218265, Marriages, 1731-1774, Tonalá, Jalisco. Tonalá is a stone's throw west of Zapotlanejo, right between Guadalajara and Zapotlanejo, so it's not too far-fetched to think they came from there.  It's really close.

So from the given data, the parents of Nicolás Alvarez were Francisco Alvarez and Ma. Antonia Nuño, residents of Zapotlanejo.  The parents of Ma. Paulina de la O Vizcarra were Pedro Antonio  Vizcarra and Anna María Herrera, residents of Tonalá and later Zapotlanejo.  It seems that we have yet another connection through our Alvarez and Nuño lines.

As of right now, I don't know exactly how Francisco Alvarez and Ma. Antonia Nuño are related to my ancestors, Pablo Alvarez and Ma. Anacleta (Cleta) Nuño, but I'm betting good money that they indeed are related, somehow. María, you mentioned that Nicolás Alvarez and Ma. Paulina de la O Viscarra had a daughter named Gertrudis who was married in Ixtlahuacán del Río. Who did she marry and when?

Well it seems that working together and pooling our resources does indeed bear fruit. Well I hope this info and my other work is enough to save me from Joseph's deadly axe.  Am I worthy???

Sincerely,
Steven Francisco Hernández López
