About the fábrica and the
limosna, the fábrica of a church was dedicated to ongoing construction
or repairs of a church, especially if it was new. The limosna was also
given to the church for the same purpose, and for other church
necessities. If it mentions that a limosna was given in a burial, that
means that it's even more humble than a cruz baja, because they could
not even afford the high price of a burial with "cruz baja." So they
had to settle for the least amount of service.
Yes thanks so much for this. I've wondered about that word "Limosna"
and now I know. But when you say the "least amount of service" I'm
wondering if that also might include what was recorded in the death
certificate. I've noticed that there is are variations in what is
recorded. Mostly if the person was an adult and married he stated as
being casado and the name of the person. If he was widowed - viudo de
name of person. died as a child- parvulo name of parents. But sometimes
like in that record I gave awhile back on my Miramontes connection, it
stated his wife and the name of his parents.
Well I just kind of answered my own question as I went to review that
record and saw that Manuel Castaneda's burial was "de Limosna." I guess
he didn't leave to much of an inheritance to anyone.
thanks Steven and thanks Simone,
