Joseph and all members of Ranchos: In light of last weekend's discussion over the surname Martín del Campo, and because of a very hectic weekend, I decided to belatedly throw in my two cents worth. The Martín del Campo family, as María Cortéz mentioned, is indeed a family of purely Alteño origins. Several of us, including María Cortéz, Roberta Romero, Irma Gutiérrez Lucero, and myself, are descended from the progenitor of the Martín del Campo clan. I'm sure there are several others out there who are also descendants. Anyone with this surname is undoubtedly related to one another. The surname is still kept by many as Martín del Campo, but over the centuries some descendants have shortened it to Martín or changed it to Martínez. My research on this particular family has been ongoing for several years now, but I have not been the only one doing research on them. Much of my data had been investigated by the late Jaime Holcombe Isunza (+). His research is available to everyone via his many family group sheets on microfilm and on the IGI. They are truly a gold mine! I have also shared, networked, and obtained much information from other great genealogists. These include Licenciado Don Mariano González Leal (through personal correspondence), María de la Luz Montejano Hilton (via her dispensation book), and SHHAR members Tony Campos, Ophelia Márquez, and Mary Lou Montagna, who personally knew Jaime Holcombe. The progenitor and patriarch of this distinguished family of hidalgos was a gentleman by the name of don Lázaro Martín del Campo (also known as Bartolomé de San Lázaro Martín del Campo). Don Lázaro, born around 1602, was a native of Revilla de Campos, province of Palencia, Castilla y León, España. See http://www.pueblos-espana.org/castilla+y+leon/palencia/revilla+de+campos/ and http://es.geocities.com/nuestros_pueblos/otros_pueblos/palencia/tierra_de_campos/revilla_de_campos.htm for information about this town. Don Lázaro was the son of don Bartolomé Martín del Campo and doña Juana García, native of Villa de Capillas, Palencia. Don Bartolomé in turn was born of don Juan Martín del Campo and doña María Antonia Antolín. Doña Juana García was a daughter of don Juan García Galán and an unknown woman (as of now). These individuals were all natives of the Province of Palencia, Spain, during the 1500's. Don Lázaro Martín del Campo, emigrated to New Spain sometime around 1625. Very little is known about how he got here or what his true motivations were to leave "la Madre Patria," but were it not for his intrepid venture, I and many others would not exist today. Sometime around 1627, perhaps in the city of Guadalajara or San Juan de los Lagos (Jalisco) he married doña María López de la Cruz, born around 1608, daughter of Lic. Don Juan Bautista Vallín, notary and scribe, and his wife doña María Estrada y López de la Cruz. According to Mariano González Leal, María was a "criolla de Querétaro" and they were both married there. Regardless, doña María was herself daughter of don Diego López de la Cruz, a merchant from Santa Olalla, province of Toledo, in the region of Andalucía, and his wife, doña Bernardina de Estrada, of Andalusian and Extremaduran descent. This is a correction to the previous erroneous conclusion that Jaime Holcombe had reached. In his family group sheets, which are now about 30 years old, he mistakenly stated that María López de la Cruz's parents were Gabriel López de la Cruz and Anna María de la Paz. He later would acknowledge and correct this error. Shortly after after their marriage, don Lázaro Martín del Campo and his wife, María López de la Cruz, came to reside in the region of San Juan de los Lagos. Jaime Holcombe Isunza stated that in the book, Historia de Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos by Pedro María Márquez (Indexes 6-9, pages 24-26), the following was written: "Entre los primeros individuos de raza blanca que tuvieron casa en el pueblo de San Juan, deben mencionarse Gerónimo de Arrona y Lázaro Martín del Campo, terratenientes en muy grande escala." Here, Lázaro Martín del Campo is mentioned as being one of the first individuals of the white race to establish a residence in San Juan de los Lagos. Indeed, don Lázaro and his wife, doña María would also go on to have quite a family. It is well known that they procreated 12 children, all born in San Juan de los Lagos. It is not known if they had any additional children who did not survive childhood. It is through their 12 children, or rather the 10 that married and continued the Martín del Campo line, that the vast Martín del Campo lineage proceeds. The matriarch of the vast Martín del Campo clan, doña María López de la Cruz, preceded her husband in death. She passed beyond the veil and her mortal remains were laid to rest on 27 May 1670, in San Juan de los Lagos. Her husband and our patriarch, don Lázaro Martín del Campo, apparently in declining health, drafted his last will and testament in San Juan de los Lagos, dated 10 October 1673. He rejoined his wife in the afterlife and was buried on 22 March 1674, beside his wife of many years, in San Juan de los Lagos. Hopefully, this little history on one of Los Altos' many Spanish hidalgo families satisfies Joseph's plea for more historical accounts from the Ranchos of both Jalisco and Zacatecas. Incidentally, given the latest uploads of data from Gloria Delgado, I think that the geography of our Ranchos should be expanded to include the state of Aguascalientes for the following reasons: 1) Aguascalientes is surrounded on the north by Zacatecas and on the south by Jalisco. 2) "Aguas" was created out of chunks of territory from both larger states. 3) "Aguas" has many cultural, genealogical, and traditional connections with both Jalisco and Zacatecas. Aguascalientes is an extension of both states in a way, although the small state is quite unique in its own little way. I would venture to say that many out there besides myself also have ancestors that came from Aguascalientes. Right? Well I'll part on that note. Blessings to all.
