BatchSearching

this might be old news but I'm finding it valuable for my work. Has this been addressed before?

Batch Searching the LDS films from home: "Or how to get the most bang for your buck when ordering films."

The batches are just that: "batches" of information keyed into the Family Search website (http://www.familysearch.org). This is information that is taken from the films and entered into the International Genealogical Index. (Not just there but for the specific purpose of Mexican Genealogy that is where I'm finding my ancestors).

How to find the batch numbers?

well you can go to any LDS Family History Center and look at the Fiche for your particular surname of  research. Find the Fiche for the State then for the Surname and then find the towns your Ancestors came from.

Orrrrr

>From the home page just go to the IGI page that looks like this:

     Jose
    Garcia

    Birth/Christening
Exact year + or - 2 years + or - 5 years + or - 10 years + or - 20 years  1865

.
.
   Mexico
Zacatecas

   *

and select the name, Jose Garcia***. Set the options for: Mexico, the estado que quieres (the state your researching), Baptisms, and set the date for 1865 plus or minus 10 years.

***We used Jose Garcia only because of it great popularity.

then hit the search button.

when the 200+ matches appear then use the "find" option of your computer and set it for the name of the town you are researching. Hit search. Now look at the different choices for your town and find the one that is closest to 1875 and click on the name. Just as an example I'm going to do this for the state of Zacatecas and town of Tepetongo. here is what the page looks like from the "Jose Garcia" closest to 1875:

573. JOSE GARCIA MARIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 22 NOV 1868 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico

well Number 573 is not to far from 1875 so we click on this and get this page:

JOSE GARCIA MARIN
  Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
22 NOV 1868   Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  JOSE MARIA GARCIA Family
  Mother:  JUANA MARIN

Messages:

Now see that batch number at the bottom and see how it is a hyperlink? Well click on that and you'll go to this page:

now click on Search and you get all the entries entered into the IGI file for Batch C600837 on Film 0445162. You can be more selective by entering a surname in the surname window and now get all of the entries for that surname on Batch C600837; Film 0445162 covering the years from 1859-1869.

So now write down the info Batch: C600837  Years: 1859-1869  Film: 0445162

now erase the surname and change the 7 at the end of the batch number to an 8 and hit search. You'll come up with a lot of entries. Click on the first one and scoll to the bottom of the page and you'll fine this information: Batch: C600838  Years: 1869-1875  Film: 0445163. Save this info also for future reference.

Try this again changing it to a 9 and you'll find it won't work so we've found the latest available (I think) Batch info entered into the IGI for Tepetongo Baptisms.

try it again going in the other direction using 6 then 5 then 4 then 3 then 2 then 1 and you'll find that this works except for the period of time between 1842-1850.

Your chart of the above info will look like this:

Tepetongo, Zacatecas 1750-1875

Year Range                Batch               Film

1750-1797            C600831        0445156
1797-1817            C600832        0445157
1818-1831            C600833        0445158
1831-1842            C600834        0445159

1850-1858            C600836        0445161
1859-1869            C600837        0445162
1869-1875            C600838        0445163

Now how do we find the Batch number for film 0445160 covering years between 1842-1850?

Go back to the beginning and instead of inserting 1865 as your starting point insert 1845 plus or minus 2 years for Jose Garcia. Hit search and find Tepetongo and you get: and you'll get the following:

23. JOSE FRANCISCO DE JESUS GARCIA BERMUDES - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 03 DEC 1843 Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico

click on this and you'll get this page:

JOSE FRANCISCO DE JESUS GARCIA BERMUDES
  Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
03 DEC 1843   Tepetongo, Zacatecas, Mexico
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  CANDELARIO GARCIA Family
  Mother:  MARIA ENCARNACION BERMUDES

Messages:

Batch No.:  Dates:  Source Call No.:  Type:  Printout Call No.:  Type:
J600835  1842 - 1850  0445160   Film  NONE

and thus we see that the Batch number for those missing years is J and not C. . ."No I don't know why they did this."

so the completed chart looks like this:

Tepetongo, Zacatecas: Bautismos  1750-1875

Year Range                Batch               Film

1750-1797            C600831        0445156
1797-1817            C600832        0445157
1818-1831            C600833        0445158
1831-1842            C600834        0445159
1842-1850             J600835        0445160
1850-1858            C600836        0445161
1859-1869            C600837        0445162
1869-1875            C600838        0445163

Now if you are researching this area of Zacatecas you'll be able to do surname searches from home using the specific Batch numbers. Just insert the Batch number in the Batch number window, Select Mexico as the region, enter the surname you want to research. Hit Search and you'll get all the entries for that surname for that Time span on that Batch number and film.

Now there might be easier ways of doing this, but with a little time you can make up a chart like the above for all your areas of research interest. You can even make up charts like this for areas you think your relatives might have come from or migrated to. That way you can find almost all the surnames you're interested in during those time periods on those particular films without having to order the films. Now of course you'll still have to order the films to confirm the info is correct or to find the padrinos or to find the grandparents for records after 1800, but you might be able to narrow down your selections a bit more. You'll also be able to make your time more productive is you have a list of all the people you're looking for on a particular film ahead of time so you can go directily to those records.

hope this helps. Some of it is probably confusing and I'd be glad to try to explain it better if you like.

Most of the below generations resided in Santa Maria de Los Angeles,
Jalisco though I have strong beliefs that Justo Puente moved there
from his original residence of Sombrerete, Zacatecas.

. . .then there was
Justo Puente who met and married Maria Josefa Sanchez
they had Josse Cipriano Puente who met and married
Eduarda Torres, they had Josse Cecilio Puente
who met and married Dominga Varela, they had
Jose Julio de Jesus Puente who met and married
Victoriana Gonsalez, they had Julio Gonsalez Puente
who met and married Virginia Diaz, they had
Antonio Diaz Puentes who met and married Louisa,
   and they had me.

Most resided in Santa Maria de Los Angeles, Jalisco but I believe
that Juan Jose possibly came from Santa Ines, Jalisco or even
Tlaltenango de Sanchez Roman, Zacatecas.

. . .then there was Juan Jose Diaz who met and married
Maria Concepcion Castaneda, they had Jose Vicente Diaz who
met and married Maria Hipolita Caciana Rivas, they had
Jose Tadeo Diaz who met and married Genoveva Leanos, they
had Jorge Diaz who met and married Andrea Torres, they had
Francisco Diaz who met and married Antonia Santa Maria,
they had Virginia Diaz who met and married Julio Puente, they
had Antonio Diaz Puentes who met and married Louisa,
    and they had me.

y tuvieron a Jorge Diaz.
y me tuvieron a mi Joseph Puentes.
